The Fool Major Arcana Tarot Card Reading

Happy Monday everyone! My card is a card of fresh, powerful starts. It’s a card of taking on all challenges with a new, inspirational view. The ‘fool’ in many tales is the only person talking sense, while the King descends into madness. This card reminds me to plow ahead to make a difference. Let me know if you’d like a card to inspire you!

The Fool Major Arcana Tarot Card Reading

The Fool

Traditional meaning:

Look past the name. It’s a misnomer. The fool is the very first card in the entire deck. Card #0. The premier spot.

It’s about starting fresh. Without misconceptions. Without piles of baggage and negative thoughts. It’s about new projects. Starting a new business. Launching a new path. Bringing fresh life into what you are doing.

The fool is about a new beginning. About optimism.

Shake off that past. Smile. Look toward that future.

Aquarian Deck Interpretation:

People can have an almost visceral resistance to the word “fool” so it’s important to look again with open eyes. This character is looking ahead with clear vision. They are nicely dressed – a warm coat, a nice hat. They are prepared. They carry a rod for protection and a white flower for beauty as well.

In so many stories it is the fool who espouses the wisdom. Who tells the truth of the tale.

A fool is sometimes discounted because they refuse to believe the nay-sayers. They refuse to just give up. They are starting afresh, with fresh energy, and they will do what it takes to reach their dreams.

Cloister Deck Interpretation:

For some reason this has a feel of the ‘selfie generation’ to me even though this card set was drawn long before that. The person is right at the edge of a cliff and distracted with things they’re holding in their hands. If they take a step forward, they’re going to fall.

But this card isn’t about that quest for acclaim. It’s about being on a journey of one’s own discovery. This person has a flower in hand, their possessions on a stick, and they’re ready to seek out new horizons. It’s just chance that they’re standing on a cliff, maybe giving one last look to the beautiful scenery of their home, before taking the path to new, unknown locations.

Just don’t step off that cliff…

Hanson-Roberts Deck Interpretation:

At first glance, the person seems to be wholly vapid. That isn’t the point of this card. Maybe let’s say they are wholly at peace in this moment and are soaking in the sunshine. It’s not that they are vapid – it is that they are calm and ready for whatever is to come. They have self-assurance and know they can handle what the world brings.

Tarot of the Divine Deck Interpretation:

The Little Mermaid / Denmark / Danish Fairy Tale – In the original fairy tale mermaids do not have a soul. When they die, they are lost. She dreams of having a soul. She falls in love with a prince, but in this version she NOT get her prince, or with the marriage to him, a soul. He marries someone else.

She could revert to a mermaid form if she killed him, but she cannot bring herself to do that. Instead she commits suicide. Due to her love and selflessness, she is granted a soul to live in Heaven.

I like the sense that her journey wasn’t solely about acquiring this guy that she barely knew. She also had a spiritual end destination in mind – the soul – and she persevered toward it. She was willing to leave her ocean behind, to risk the unknown, and more. Even when all hope was lost, she would not give in to darkness. As a result, she found what she sought for.

I love the colors of the card. I love the dancing fish and soaring birds.

On the other hand, I don’t like that the card shows her longing for the castle. In the fairy tale having a soul is equally important to her. She doesn’t want to simply dissolve into foam when she dies. So maybe she is actually looking ‘past’ the castle – after all, it’s on her left, and she is looking ‘straight ahead’. Maybe her focus is not on the castle but what is ahead of her in life.
